CinemArcade
This is the podcast about movies, videogames, and the sparks that fly when those worlds collide! Each week, Steve Guntli, Jennifer Bannister, and Justin Wilhelm will watch a movie and then play the video game based on that movie to evaluate the strengths, weaknesses, similarities, and differences between the two mediums to see how they complement, or contradict, each other!

We conclude our GREMLINS miniseries this week by taking in the madcap masterpiece that is GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH. This 1990 sequel upended all expectations to became a weird, subversive, experimental comedy that blends monster movies and Looney Tunes in equal measure. We're also playing the 1990 game adaptation for the NES, which itself may be deserving of a cult audience.

Welcome to our first miniseries! Once in a while, we'll break from our usual format to focus on multiple entries in a series, so this week and next week, we'll be discussing the GREMLINS franchise! It all starts here, with the 1984 smash hit original, directed by Joe Dante! The film is a wildly fun blend of horror, adventure, and comedy that has become a perennial Christmas favorite. The hugely popular film inspired some early Atari adaptations, so we'll be dusting off the old joysticks to play the Atari 2600 version.

This week, our show eats itself like a snake eating it's tail: we're talking about the game, based on the movie, based on the game RATCHET & CLANK! The furry fighter and his robot pal debuted with a classic game on the PS2 and have built a high-quality series of hit action platformers. The 2016 film adaptation tried to capture some of the game's cartoonish wit and space opera thrills, but it's the 2016 RATCHET & CLANK game (both a remake of the original and an adaptation of the film, which is an adaptation of the original game, which... my nose is bleeding) that really gets it right.

This week we're covering one of our oldest movies and one of our newest games. Alfred Hitchcock's 1958 masterwork VERTIGO has been called by some the greatest thriller ever made, which sets a pretty high bar for it's 2019 video game adaptation. The game squares this circle by... well, really not even trying to tell the original story.

This week we're talking all about the surprising phenomenon that was BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA from 1992! Francis Ford Coppola's rendition of the classic DRACULA tale is one of the weirdest, most operatic horror films of the 90s. It's a film aimed at grown-ups that, despite it's flashy style, doesn't really translate to a video game format. But that didn't stop them from trying; the BRAM STOKER'S DRACULA game fundamentally misunderstands the source material by making it an action-adventure game starring Keanu Reeves' character. It all makes for a pretty wild episode.

One of the most obscure movie/game pairings we'll be covering, GOTCHA! is a 1985 comedy-thriller from the director of REVENGE OF THE NERDS that actually helped usher in the paintball craze. GOTCHA! THE SPORT is an oddball lightgun shooter for the NES based on the toy line based on the movie! The whole thing makes for a weird and fascinating story, so load up your paint pellets and get ready to go on a journey!

Party time! Excellent! This week we're talking about a bona fide comedy classic, 1992's WAYNE'S WORLD! Far and away the best SNL movie, Penelope Spheeris' subversive gem defined comedy in the 90s and made stars out of Mike Meyers and Dana Carvey. Then, we're going to be playing the largely-forgotten SNES game adaptation, featuring a big-headed Wayne as he tries to rescue Garth from a large gelatinous blob that has kidnapped Garth (which I assumed was a deleted scene in the movie).

Behold, the beginning of the Dark Universe! This week, we're watching the misbegotten 2017 Tom Cruise franchise non-starter THE MUMMY, digging into the failed plans for a massive cinematic universe and trying to figure out just what went wrong. Then, we're playing the surprisingly great game adaptation, THE MUMMY DEMASTERED, a Metroidvania-style adventure with some great pixel art and a few ideas that just might be too clever for its own good.

Welcome to CinemArcade, the podcast about movies, video games, and the sparks that fly when those worlds collide! Each week on this show, we're going to watch a movie and then play it's corresponding video game to see how the two media contradict or complement each other. For this, our very first episode, we thought we'd start with the grandaddy, a movie that redefined blockbusters for a generation with a game that literally almost killed the video game industry. We're talking E.T.: THE EXTRA-TERRESTRIAL, Steven Spielberg's groundbreaking smash hit, as well as it's Atari 2600 tie-in, which people wanted to smash and hit and literally broke ground to get rid of it! See what we did there?
